Fact 89: The 1925 film The Phantom of the Opera isn’t the only version to be made by Universal Studios. In 1943, another The Phantom of the Opera was produced. According to IMDb, Universal originally planned for this movie to be an Abbott and Costello film. They also planned for Lon Chaney Jr. to play the Phantom like his father once did, but neither of these things happened. Instead, Claude Rains played the Phantom.
